Talk to your PM daily, b’coz everyday is an appraisal day.

So many posts, it seems like the blog thing has really caught the pace here. Thanks everyone for keeping this place rocking.

When I read Rajiv’s first blog about his fish tank story months back , I remember I had already started swimming with those Gold Fishes (weren’t they Gold fish Rajiv?). Oops………….F1, F1, F1…………..Didn’t I tell you that I just know half of the swimming thing, I only know how to jump into the water and rest….. is the another 50% to me, rofl . That post was a very fresh one. Then came those technical blogs, good too. And again a sweet flashback with Rajarshi (we miss you in the office today, kokhun fircho, Major? – I am not sure if I have written that line properly, b’coz I am still in my Bengla-Nursery. All I meant to say is “When are you returning back to eF, Major?”).

How could I restrict myself? I also wrote a post 1.5 months back but then couldn’t look into this site much. But as a blog-lover I was constantly hooked to this latest passion of mine. Not here at eF blogs but I was constantly shouting at my very own blog site http://shoutwithrohit.blogspot.com. And a secret (no more) I have 6 (no no 7, yes 7) blog sites today. I wish I can keep all of them fresh all the time. I can already see Rajiv’s raised eyebrows. Don’t worry, when in office work first :).

Yesterday I was thinking of doing a CnP of my latest poem onto this eF blog site but then decided to write a fresh one. So thought of writing about the recent personal experience…

Two weeks back I was on a small leave, thanks to my PM & HR for granting it. I had gone to my home town Jhumri Telaiya (the place does exist in reality & it’s beautiful for so many reasons). Being with your family is always a great pleasure but this time there was something more than that.

The first day passed as usual. Being at home, talking to the family, etc. I am not that go-out-with-your-friends-and-hit-the-road-and-do-lots-of-gossips-kind guy. I prefer being at home with family b’coz that keeps me healthy :). But this time there was another angle involved. Though I am religious at heart but I don’t spend any time in the puja, paath, etc. But this time….this time I spent most of my vacation time in the temple. Why, why? Just like that. Or may be because something pulled me there. I don't know really. I remember I didn’t want to move out of the temple until my sweetheart, “Mei”, used to remind me that I need to go home and have dinner. Had she not, I would have been even thinner (is there a scope still Rohit?). My life is really incomplete without her today. I used to rush, eat (as fast as possible) and back to temple. I was completely addicted, proudly addicted.

Those sessions came out to be like debugging sessions to me: Press F5 key with breakpoints on every line and just keep staring at the watch window. And I think it gave me what I must have been looking for, I got the prasad, and it tastes awesome, even today. It is named “self-appraisal”.

I decided to do my self-appraisal (sorry Rajiv, I had to do it without you. B’coz I found my this PM kinder :-P). It was a very deep appraisal. And I did it in 0s & 1s. I checked my every nook, every corner, every vein, every muscle, every thought, every dream. And I was surprised………….No, actually I was shocked. I got 0/100000000++s. I found that everything has scope for improvement, yes even dreams too. It’s not that I don’t give my attention to my self, but how could I be happy with this result. I had to be disappointed. I was. But hey, I told you no, my PM is very kind, he still gave me promotion, towards a better Rohit. And increments also….in the form of sharper focus. Thanks, love you!!!

What changes are going to take place, I don’t know, that only people around me can/have feel/felt. But God taught me plenty. This is what they are in a brief:

“Just giving your best is not important; you need to learn, rather master, to manage your efforts. You need to be much focused all the times and simultaneously do the self evaluation, regularly, may be daily. Or may be every night, as I do. It’s not just about focusing on your office work, rather it’s about focusing on everything, your behavior, your interactions, your endeavors, your failures, your truths, your lies, your loves, your hates, everything…………your complete self.”

Although I am a little shy (still?) person but I am glad I could write these. Thanks to the new blogging-habit. I wrote it just to remind myself and also to tell or retell (for those who do so already) all the folks out here that do your self-appraisal, do it today. Don’t worry even if the score is bad (it would be, aren’t self appraisals for that only?). Still believe me ‘the sabka PM (now read: Progress Manager)’ is toooooooooooo kind, he will always reward you. God might not be as technical as my PM Rajiv but…he is kinder then anyone. I can already see Rajiv giving a nod to this sentence :). Need I say anything more now?

So, get hooked to your PM today and make sure to talk to him daily. April might be your time for professional appraisals, but there is another, more important, appraisal taking place every day…it’s about your life. Come scan yourself, honestly. Make sure you don’t skip it any day.

In IT world, we say that a successful test is the one that can find bugs. I think I can add something. A successful self-appraisal is that which can disappoint you at the first look. (but definitely it will do good to you later on)

All the best for your disappointments, believe me you will love to find them!!!

"Go For God!"

Cheers,

Rohit

P.S. I am again planning a trip to my sweet hometown this weekend, thanks to the ‘bonus’ holiday on Friday.

Mission ‘Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 a.k.a. IE7’

Wow Internet Explorer 7!!! It is Awesome!!! Tabbed look, RSS feed viewer, Search box, Quick Tabs, Stronger Security, and lots of other things. I feel blessed.

Days passed & nights passed with blessings all around. But hold on what’s that? Is that a fly in my soup? IE7 doesn’t work with this software; IE7 doesn’t work with that software. Phew!!!

.

Googling…

Oh, it’s not the IE7; it’s the software which is not compatible with IE7. Seems like they need to release new versions. But until that happens, it seems that I need to adieu to IE7. I will miss you.

Anyways, let me uninstall the IE7. How do I do that? IE7 doesn’t have any uninstall option in the Start Menu entries. Oh, you are a dumbo Rohit. You need to go to Add/Remove Programs from Control Panel. Scrolling the big list…here it is Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. Let me click on it to get the Change/Remove button. Where is the button? Hey. Hello. Where are you? Let me see others in the list. They have the button. Why it’s not on the IE7?

Let me go the Microsoft way….Reboot the machine.

Restarted -> Logged in as Local Administrator to avoid permissions issues -> Went to Add/Remove Programs. Uff, It’s not there still. (God!!! Time to file a tcket to IT Helpdesk?)

Googling….

Oh, I need to select “Show updates” on the top of the Add/Remove dialog box. I selected it and then could see few updates under IE7. YES!!! They have the buttons. Seems like I have to uninstall the updates first to get the button on IE7 item. Smart concept!!!

I uninstalled the 2 updates. Rebooted the machine. Went to Add/Remove box. . Fainted! No buttons yet. Now what is the problem? Who took the button?

Googling….

Googling….

Googling…..

GREAT!!! Long live Microsoft!!! It’s a known Bug.

Microsoft believes that after installing IE7 on your machine, if you get a Change/Remove button in the Add/Remove Dialog box for IE7, you are lucky. If you don’t, you are in the mass, just like me. Read this: KB923721. The page reads: “You cannot uninstall Windows Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2”. What a title! Though the page speaks about problems with IE 7 Beta 2 only, but it is true with the IE7 Final version too. I used the Final version only.

The suggested workaround: 7MB download cost on the network. . You need to download the Internet Explorer Uninstall Tool package.

The uninstaller uninstalls the IE7 and you get back your IE6. At last! (I am feeling better now. I will sleep well tonight. Thanks KB, thanks Microsoft.)

This is the first time I have come around a software which asks you to download the uninstaller separately. I wonder Microsoft didn’t release any patch for this too.

Lesson Learnt: When you download IE7 installer, make sure you download the IE7 Uninstall Tool too.

Cheers!

Rohit
